Choosing a tree that will stand in your front yard for 100-200 years is important for you and your home, and for the
neighborhood.  You want a tree that will enhance the value of your home and fit in with the neighborhood, and not
require a lot of maintenance and care.

The list of trees below was put together by a panel of arborists assembled by the Sacramento Tree Foundation.
These trees meet the goals of the Arden Park front yard/street tree Program. We are trying to plant long lasting
trees that raise property values and improve the quality of life in a neighborhood by maintaining the shaded, tree
lined streets. These trees are a continuation of the original planting by developers when the neighborhoods were
build 50 years ago -- a time when Sacramento was getting its reputation as the "City of Trees ".

The recommended trees are medium-to-large deciduous trees that lose their leaves in Winter to let in warming sun
while providing shade in the summer when it is needed.  They are also appropriate for the climate and soil in
Sacramento, don't have surface root  problems, resist disease and other problems, and fit the watering/drainage
pattern of your lawn.

These larger Street Trees are recommended as they:

  • Provide Shade Canopy on the Street to encourage people to be outside even on the hottest days so folks
meet their neighbors. (This correlates with less crime and a better sense of neighborhood.)

  • Make Streets Walkable- for children going to school and adults getting exercise.

  • Save energy cooling homes.

  • Preserve road surfaces: streets that are protected from direct sun take 50% less maintenance and are less
    likely to pot hole

  • Larger Trees require less maintenance over the long run and are proven to increase home values
List of Free Trees Provided with Arden Street Tree Program

This is the list of Free Tree we provide: we will dig holes with our backhoe.  For other tree types other than those
listed below,  you will need to purchase these trees yourself.  We also ask that they meet the "Street Tree" goals of
the program. You can review your tree selection with the Sacramento Tree Foundation forester who will have pictures
and information on the recommended trees, and usually has experience with alternate choices people make-- and
can tell you why a "popular" tree is not on the list.*

  • Valley Oak
  • European Hackberry
  • Scarlet Oak *1
  • Red Oak *1
  • Willow Oak
  • Red Maple
  • Zelkova (faster grower Arden soil, but must prune when small )
  • Bur Oak
  • London Plane (fastest grower Arden Soil)

For smaller yards -

  • Chinese Pistache*2
  • Tupelo
  • Trident Maple*3
  • Goldenrain Tree*3

* 1recommended against as hold brown leaves all winder, often gets top heavy.
*2. Slow grower in lawn if watered. smaller tree. we discourage despite great fall color.
*3  much smaller tree, discouraged.

* Why Isn't a Popular Tree on this list?

Popular trees may not be on this list due to unfavorable characteristics for the Arden area environment or possibly
because the Sacramento Tree Foundation has not been able to obtain them at affordable prices.   For example,  the
popular Mulberry Tree is not recommended due to its strong tendency toward surface rooting, a problem with slab
foundation homes.  Redwood Trees are not on the list as they don't spread out -- and require an increasing amount
of water when they grow, a  problem that only became obvious when they became fully grown and began to look
sickly.
